How can you help your dog?
-
Seek veterinary attention to determine if there is a medical problem.
-
Make sure the entire family agrees which behaviors are acceptable and which are not acceptable.
-
Try to identify sources of your dog's stress, such as being chased by children or other animals, or tension in the household.
-
Provide a predictable environment and schedule for your dog.
-
Make a point of rewarding acceptable behavior consistently, not taking it for granted.
-
Try to ignore the undesirable behavior and avoid punishment. Punishment may increase your dog's stress.
-
Redirect the behavior by asking your dog to come and sit. Offer exercise, play or a toy stuffed with food. Then reward your dog.
-
Work with your veterinarian on a program of desensitization, counter conditioning and other therapy if needed.
